Cisco license tiers: the suffix that trips up used buyers
The single most common used-buyer mistake is assuming a part-number suffix means the same thing across generations. On the Catalyst 9000, the network-stack tier is baked into the hardware part number and is perpetual; a separate Cisco DNA / Catalyst subscription (term-based) rides on top.

A 3850 and a 9300 both say "StackWise-480," but their CPUs and stack silicon are incompatible, they will not stack together. A 9300 will not stack with a 9300L (different ring), a 9200 will not stack with a 9200L, and a member running Essentials will not join a stack running Advantage. Buy stack members as a matched set, or verify model, uplink type, and tier before mixing.
Verify support and EOL before you buy
Silicon that works today is worthless if it is past its last software and TAC date. Before you commit, confirm the unit will be supported for as long as you need it.
