The Dell PowerEdge R740xd is a 2U dual-socket rack server built for storage-dense and mixed compute workloads. This unit ships with 2× Intel Xeon Silver 4216 (16-core / 32-thread each, Cascade Lake), 128 GB DDR4 (8× 16 GB), and 24× 2.5″ hot-swap bays.

The platform carries 24 DIMM slots across two sockets (up to 3 TB RDIMM, more with LRDIMM), iDRAC9 Enterprise with Lifecycle Controller for out-of-band management, and up to 8× PCIe Gen3 slots. The “xd” storage-dense chassis supports up to 24 front SFF bays plus rear flex bays and NVMe-capable backplanes, driven by a Dell PERC RAID controller.

Dual redundant hot-plug power supplies and hot-swap cooling keep it serviceable; rails and bezel are included. It suits virtualization, software-defined storage (vSAN / Ceph), backup targets and general-purpose consolidation where drive count matters.
